How Humor Can Improve Your Marketing Campaign

How Humor Can Improve Your Marketing Campaign

We all know that laughter is an important part of a great life. Laughing at multiple points during the day makes it feel more worthwhile and memorable. When people find something enjoyable and funny, they are more likely to want to show their friends and family too. This is because laughter and enjoyment are social; people want to be happy, of course. This is why you can and should involve a level of humor in your marketing campaigns, especially digital ones since they are altogether becoming more and more impactful. Read on to find out useful ways to do this.

Be spontaneous

Mistakes are mostly due to human errors (we don’t need a study to prove that). When it comes to marketing campaigns, there is a very wide room for human error to occur. From simple things like typos on social media to getting timings wrong for content marketing. Viewers notice these things, giving you an opportunity to show that though you lead or are part of a business, you aren’t a machine! You are still very much a human. This gives you the chance to connect with your target audience in a funny and relatable way.

Use your own weaknesses

Being overly serious is the perfect way to make your target audience think your brand is overly serious, simply put. Everyone knows that everyone has flaws, and that includes the people running marketing campaigns. Using a touch of irony can set off a funny way to acknowledge imperfections within a business. In this way, you can rise up two birds with one arm: your audience will love your brand more because of the humor and they will also understand your brand better, facilitating a better brand-audience connection.

Use jokes to your advantage

Of course, you should use jokes if trying to come across as humorous! Using these to the advantage of the marketing campaign looks like incorporating jokes that your target audience will share with their own social media followings, giving your campaign better consumer reach. Talk to your audience directly, support their mindsets, develop a brand identity to increase brand loyalty and overall make your audience feel great about themselves. Happiness sells.

Breaking the ice with warm hands

This point is referring to you avoiding the normality of simply being awkward. First interactions are often overly cordial and by-the-book. You want to avoid this, as it makes you seem plain and uninteresting. Your target audience is more likely to turn to brands that entice them with interesting first glances.

Know your target audience well by studying your social media analytics. Create brilliant ideal consumer profiles. Then, appeal to these directly through finely-tuned humor that will catch their attention. Use humor from the outset of your marketing campaign to set your brand apart from similar brands running their own marketing campaigns.

Transparency with the marketing team

This point should be self-explanatory and is here to remind you of its importance. Maintain a level of homogeneity within your marketing team with a meeting. Here, set out clearly that a focus should be incorporating more humor into marketing ads. Hold the space for everyone to figure out and agree with what is not appropriate humor. A good thing to list at this point is sarcasm – as this is hard to get across well and often comes across as dry and insensible to consumers. Mention that any jokes that can come across as offensive or just insensitive should be avoided at all costs. Jokes that target race, gender, and ability should never be used in a marketing campaign.

Use everyday situations

Coming to your target audience on a level that they already know and appreciate is valuable. Think of everyday situations that your product fits into, and create jokes about these things, using your product to add substance to the joke. This will make your brand seem very relevant and interesting.

Understand that there is no sure recipe for getting the right level of humor into your marketing campaigns. You need a bit of technique, and you need to balance that technique with some healthy intuition. If you don’t have one or the other (or both), don’t run your marketing campaign alone.
